Salento, the  luminous green land located between two seas, is recognized throughout the world also for its rich artisanal tradition, embodied in a vivid Mediterranean aesthetic. Behind every loom made fabric,  every handcrafted  ceramic cup realized with schizzato, or olive wood tagliere there are people, stories, old techniques , ancient knowledge and traditions that are handed down from generation to generation.

“For  me artisanal is synonymous with sentimental”

NINALEUCA designer Benedetta/Nina continually explores Salento in search for artisans in particular weaving workshops who are reviving  the old techniques of loom made fabrics, characterized by  bright colors inspired to nature and intricate geometric patterns

The tradition of working by loom yarn such as hemp, cotton and linen is lost in the mists of time and seems to date back to the Saracens. Traditionally fabrics were woven on large wooden looms. Organizing the loom before starting to weave was the most difficult task. In the nineteenth century, wooden looms have been replaced mostly  by mechanical looms. Setting the loom is no longer so complicated, a punched card is used, but the designs of Salento weavers continue to repeat centuries-old traditional patterns

Those fabric woven by loom for NINALEUCA are typically made in 2/3 colors, with 100% pure cotton yarn  coming from America or India. Some patterns  are the traditional ones, but most are designed exclusively by hand from Benedetta.
